Introduction

HTTP Status Code 502-Bad Gateway  is one of the classes of 5×× (Server Error) response code that indicates the server got an incorrect answer from the upstream server while functioning or acting  as a gateway or proxy. In general term ,It indicates the one of the servers which is on the internet will receive an invalid response from another server which is on the same internet.

You can get a 502 error in every browser, on any operating system, and on any device, regardless of your configuration.

The edge server (host functioning as a proxy) was unable to obtain a valid or any response from the origin server, resulting in a 502 (also called upstream server). This may happen for a variety of reasons, which we’ll go through in the next section. If your origin server sends a 502 Bad Gateway answer to one of KeyCDN’s edge servers, KeyCDN will deliver a 500 Origin Not Reachable page. Check out our CDN Error Codes page to learn more about how KeyCDN handles various error codes.

How Can a 502 Error Appear?

Web servers, operating systems, and browsers are all in use. You may, for example, be using MacOS and the Google Chrome browser. Someone else, on the other hand, may be using Firefox and the Windows 10 operating system.

Furthermore, some websites allow users to personalize how the 502 Bad Gateway error is displayed to them.

These versions, however, all have the same meaning. An incoming server sent an incorrect answer to one of the servers serving as a gateway or proxy.

The 502 error can appear in different ways. The most common include:

502 Bad Gateway
Error 502
502 Server Error: The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request
Temporary Error (502)
502. That’s an error
HTTP 502
502 Service Temporarily Overloaded
502 Proxy Error

When do you get HTTP Error 502?

The server was unable to give a proper answer to the request, thus you may see this error. A 502 error might be caused by a number of different factors. The most frequent causes are shown below.

1.Origin Server is Down:

One of the possible causes of this issue is that the server is not functioning correctly. This indicates that the server is unavailable; there are a variety of reasons for this, including the server being down, a connectivity issue, or a large volume of traffic on the server.

2. Domain Name:

The domain is having difficulties recognizing the right IP address, which is another reason of the 502. Misconfigured DNS records at the domain hosting level are usually to blame. Even if you have the correct DNS entries in place, DNS changes might take some time to propagate globally.

3.Firewall Request Blocking:

The firewall is used to prevent data from being sent between the servers. Another typical cause of the 502 error is this. It’s possible that your WordPress security plugins will prevent connection between the servers, or even ban your local or ISP IP address. You can rule out this possibility by trying to view the site from a different Internet connection. Furthermore, some DDOS security systems are overly sensitive and begin blocking server requests.

4. Server Failure:

If the server has totally failed, you may receive a 502 error. It might be due to a system failure, or the server could be taken offline for maintenance or other reasons. This might potentially be due to the server’s content infringing on the terms and conditions of the server provider.

5. Browser Error:

Some browser extensions, notably AdBlock extensions, might sometimes cause issues when viewing the page. Aside from that, there are a few uncommon situations when the issue is caused by an old browser version.

How to Fix HTTP Error 502?

The majority of the time, a 502 bad gateway issue has nothing to do with you as a site visitor. However, there are a few things you can do to be sure it’s not a problem on your end. Try these troubleshooting ideas in order since you might be able to solve the problem sooner than you thought.
